Make the evening a little easier to put down.

An evening can stay busy long after the work has finished. There is one more message, one more episode, and a kitchen that still needs attention.

An evening can stay busy long after the work has finished. There is one more message, one more episode, and a kitchen that still needs attention.

A gentler end to the day can begin with one choice, rather than a cupboard of sleep products.

Choose the part you can change

Perhaps you can put the next morning’s essentials together before you sit down. Perhaps you would enjoy reading something quiet instead of answering another message.

Those are practical suggestions, not tested sleep treatments. Choose one that reduces a task instead of adding a ritual you must complete perfectly.

NHS insomnia guidance includes regular waking times, a dark and quiet bedroom, and time to relax before bed. It also advises seeking help if sleep difficulties persist or interfere with daily life. [1]

Let dinner remain dinner

You do not need to turn a banana, a handful of seeds or an evening drink into a measured dose for sleep neurotransmitters. This article does not establish that any one food will make you sleepy.

A comfortable routine may be welcome, but it is not a guaranteed answer to insomnia. The NHS describes cognitive behavioural therapy among the treatments a clinician may offer. [1]

If the small changes do not help, that is a reason to investigate further, not to blame yourself for failing to unwind.

Tonight, choose one manageable way to finish the evening. You can leave the promise of perfect sleep out of it.

Sources, evidence and limits

Evidence basis: NHS insomnia guidance read in full, including routines, assessment and CBT. No primary trial of the exact suggested evening choices was reviewed; no supplement recommendation made.

Least certain: Effect of a particular routine and the cause of an individual’s sleep difficulty.

Contrary evidence and context: Habit changes can be useful, but persistent insomnia may need structured treatment or assessment for other causes. A routine is not equivalent to CBT for insomnia.

What would change the conclusion: Persistent impairment, suspected breathing-related sleep issues, medication effects or another diagnosis changes the appropriate response.
