Fruit and vegetables can share the day.
Fruit at breakfast and vegetables at dinner do not need to compete for a place in your day.

A study headline might put one ahead of the other. That does not automatically give us a reason to remove the food that came second.
Leave the ranking aside
A cross-sectional study can describe foods and health measures collected around the same time. It cannot establish that choosing fruit instead of vegetables prevents a condition.
For an ordinary shopping trip, variety remains a useful starting point. Fresh, frozen and canned produce can all have a place. [1]
Make two small spaces
Have a piece of fruit when it suits you. Put a familiar vegetable into a meal: cabbage in soup, greens beside rice, or cucumber with lunch.
There is no need for a different fruit every day or an elaborate bowl before vegetables count.
Choose forms and amounts that fit your dietary needs. The aim here is room for both, rather than another winner to buy.

Produce can be fresh, frozen, canned or cooked; no disease ranking inferred.
Least certain: The MBG-linked observational disease estimates were not independently verified.
Contrary evidence and limits: Confounding and reverse causation can affect cross-sectional associations.
What would change the conclusion: An allergy, prescribed restriction or stronger comparative trial could alter individual choices.
Claims not adopted: No fruit-versus-vegetable disease ranking.
